Struggling with Low Storage on an HP Laptop Running Windows 11

Hey everyone! I'm trying to help my dad who recently got into gaming on his HP laptop with Windows 11. He decided to install Steam to play Age of Empires 2, but we've run into a major issue with storage. The laptop has a 120GB hard drive, and after spending hours trying to free up space, we only have about 12.7GB left. The game itself requires 15GB! I've cleared temp files, the recycle bin, and even analyzed the storage with WinDirStat, which shows that 105GB is used up by system files, but I can't seem to account for the other 45GB of space. He does have a 60GB external drive that he's using for installing games, but I'm worried that might slow things down. Any suggestions on how to tackle this phantom storage issue and at least free up 10GB?

The simplest solution for ongoing storage issues is to upgrade the hard drive. HP laptops are generally straightforward to work on, so look up a tutorial on replacing the hard drive for your specific model. You could also create a bootable USB drive with Windows 11 and use the external drive for the installation. Plus, if he's into games, maybe suggest alternatives like Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth, which is similar but more fun!

Exactly! It's a great game and the soundtrack is awesome. Plus, it runs smoother too!

Thanks for the compliment! I’m a bit lost when it comes to hardware, though. I’m more of a software person. I might need a bit of help with the actual hardware replacement!

If you want a quick fix, try performing a disk cleanup. Search for "delete temporary files" in your search bar, run it, and delete everything it suggests. Then, run the built-in Disk Cleanup tool and make sure to select the 'Clean up system files' option. Sometimes old game files and auto-saves can eat a ton of space.

I appreciate the tips! Though I did clear out temp files already, I’ll try your method and check for any fat save files!

If you're running low, definitely keep an eye on those auto-saves. They can pile up without you realizing.

You should definitely consider replacing the HDD with a 500GB SSD. It’s a huge upgrade and would make a noticeable difference. Just remember to back up everything first—cloning the drives can sometimes lead to data loss if something goes wrong. There are some good guides on this, so check YouTube for the step-by-step!

That sounds promising! If you could find a detailed video, that’d be super helpful for both me and my dad. He likes to see what’s going on instead of just hearing me explain it.

Definitely go for the SSD! It's way better than a standard HDD.

Another route is subscribing to a cloud gaming service like NVIDIA's GeForce Now. It can help if you don’t want to spend money on hardware right now. Just keep in mind, it can add up cost-wise depending on how often he games.

Honestly, those small drives are tough with the updates and system files always taking up space. It's probably best to start looking for a larger storage solution if gaming is the goal.
