I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from a Ryzen 7 5700G to something better, like a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. However, I've found out that the 9800X3D isn't compatible with my Asus Prime B550M-A motherboard. Can anyone recommend a powerful CPU that fits my current motherboard? If not, is it worth it to upgrade both the motherboard and CPU together, or is that a big hassle? Thanks!

You're currently on AM4, which had five generations of upgrades up to the 5000 series. The 9800X3D is part of the new AM5 lineup. I’d recommend going for an AM5 motherboard with DDR5 RAM for a massive performance boost. The 5700X3D and 5800X3D are great, but they’re pricey since they're older now.
Honestly, if you're on an AM5 platform, you won't see much improvement from the 5700G. You might be better off saving up or just going straight for the AM5 motherboard.
It all depends on how much you're willing to spend. If you stick with the 9800, you’ll need to replace both your motherboard and RAM. But if you want to keep it AM4, those X3D options are solid gaming choices.
The best AMD CPU you can get for an AM4 socket is probably the 5800X3D for gaming. However, I’d really consider upgrading to an AM5 motherboard; a decent B650 won't break the bank and will future-proof your setup. Plus, it's worth checking prices on those newer CPUs.
Thanks for the info! Any specific B650 motherboards you recommend? And is switching everything a hassle?
Depending on where you live, you might find a good deal like the Ryzen 7600X3D with 32GB DDR5 RAM and a budget motherboard for about the same price as the 9800X3D. Which country are you in?
I'm in the UK.
Just a heads up, if the 9800 doesn't fit, then the 7600 won't either!
Wasn't the 5800X3D discontinued? I thought the 5700X3D was the best AM4 CPU for gaming right now.
