Thinking About Transitioning to Cloud DevOps – Am I Ready?

I've recently found out that my company is enforcing a mandatory return to office policy, requiring anyone within 40 miles to come in daily. As I consider this change, I'm curious about moving into a Cloud DevOps role. While I've never officially held a Cloud job, I do have relevant experience that I think could help me. Here's a summary of my recent work: I've architected and maintained development automation for Unity-based XR applications, managed production-grade re-signing environments and infrastructure, and built automation scripts in Python, Bash, and PowerShell for various processes. My background primarily involves on-premise work with some AWS and Azure projects, but I'm eager to learn if my experience is enough to make the leap into a Cloud DevOps position.

Honestly, applying to some entry-level roles could help you gauge where you stand. With your experience, especially in CI/CD and observability, I think you might have a shot! Although, be aware it might lean towards junior positions. Go for it!

You have some solid skills on your resume! If you showcased your ability to learn quickly in interviews, I’d consider hiring you for a junior role. Just be aware, you might start on the lower end of the ladder due to the lack of direct cloud experience.

I see CICD experience, which is a plus! But do dive into observability tools and get familiar with container systems like Docker and Kubernetes. Being comfortable with networking basics could also give you an edge. Consider getting some cloud-specific certifications to bolster your profile!

Thanks for the tips! I've done a bit with Docker already, hosting web apps that integrate AI tooling. I need to brush up more on networking, though.
