Hey everyone! I'm about to score a used Acer Aspire 3 laptop for 300 euros from a family friend. It's a bit of a steal since it was originally 500 euros and hasn't been used much. The catch is, it doesn't come with an operating system. I'm considering diving into Linux since I've heard a lot of good things about it. I need something user-friendly because, to be honest, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to tech. Any suggestions on which Linux distro would be best for me? Do I need a USB flash drive to install it? I really appreciate any tips you can provide!

Just remember, after you install, test everything out—especially the sound, keyboard backlight, and camera. You’ll want to make sure all the features work as expected before diving in.
I’ll keep that in mind! It’s exciting to try something new!
I think Linux Mint would be a great fit for you! It’s lightweight and super easy to use, plus there's loads of help available online if you get stuck. You might want to try installing Mint alongside your current OS first to see how you like it. It might even help revive your old laptop!
You’re right, Mint is solid! Plus, I’ve heard installing it next to Windows is a great way to test it out without fully committing.
If you're not sure about the specs, just check if it has integrated graphics instead of Nvidia; their driver stuff can be tricky!
You could also check out other distributions like Pop!_OS or Zorin OS. They all have their unique vibe, and you can customize them to look however you want!
So many choices! I can't wait to personalize it!
Right? The customization options really make it fun!
Definitely go for a USB flash drive! You can use it to create a bootable installer. I recommend trying out both Linux Mint and Ubuntu to see which one you prefer. Just download the ISO from their websites and use a tool like Balena Etcher or Rufus to make the bootable USB. Super straightforward! Once you boot from the USB, it’ll let you explore the live environment before installation.
This sounds easy enough! I’ll look up some tutorials just to get a sense of the process.
Just make sure to check your laptop's connection to power during the install process; the last thing you want is it to die mid-install!
Thanks for the heads up! I’ll definitely check everything after installation.
