Hey there! I'm feeling a bit lost after diving into a sea of CPU benchmarks and could really use some real-world advice. Here's the scoop:
Currently, I've got an i9-12900K paired with an RX 9070 XT and 32 GB of DDR5-6000 CL40 RAM. I'm excited about my new Ryzen 7 9800X3D build, which includes an RTX 5080, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 RAM, a 2 TB NVMe drive, and an 850 W PSU, all for around €1,900 here in Germany.
The new system is on its way and should arrive in about two weeks, but I'm confused by the huge differences in benchmarks I've seen between the i9-12900K and the 9800X3D. Some videos on YouTube show the 9800X3D outpacing the i9-12900K by 30-60 FPS in games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077, claiming up to 45% gains – especially at 1440p and 4K. Yet, other benchmarks show a smaller difference, only around 10-30 FPS or 10-25% overall performance. According to TechPowerUp, it's just about a 9% difference overall.
I mainly game on a 1440p 360 Hz OLED, and play quite a few competitive titles like CS2 and PUBG, where the i9-12900K struggles to maintain around 300 FPS, even at lower settings. I'm also into AAA games like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk.
So, I'd love to know: what real gains should I expect going from the 12900K to the 9800X3D? Are those big FPS jumps just in specific scenarios, or will I see improvements in regular gameplay too, especially for high-refresh 1440p and esports titles? Any experiences from folks who've upgraded from a similar Intel setup would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You'll definitely need to tune the 12900K and use faster RAM to really see what it can do. But right out of the box, the 9800X3D should outperform it, especially in games like CS2.
You're making the right choice ditching the i9! You can expect a performance bump between 35-45%, depending on how lucky you get with your chip. Just ensure you're using EXPO and PBO settings for the best results at 1440p.
Expect about a 30-40% performance increase. Just remember, not all games are CPU-heavy. It might also matter if they're using the same GPU setup as yours. Different settings can definitely lead to varied results.
Thanks for the insight! If I’m right, even a 30-40% increase from just the CPU upgrade would be awesome for me. Couple that with the GPU boost, and I could see a 50% improvement in the right games!

That's reassuring! I did tweak my i9 a little, more towards undervolting to keep temps down, so I guess that’s why it’s been underperforming. My DDR5-6000 CL40 might hold it back too.
