Thoughts on Setting Up a Monitoring Wall for Sys/Admin Teams?

I'm considering implementing a monitoring wall for our Sys/Admin team to keep track of various systems. My focus would be on monitoring online services like Microsoft and other external app outages, ISP links for network monitoring, server statuses (online/offline), and ticketing system KPIs. What applications would you recommend for running this setup?

Honestly, a monitoring wall might not be the best investment. You're better off improving alerts that are meaningful and actionable. Spending your time on enhancing text or email notifications can lead to better outcomes than just a display wall.

I see the appeal of having real-time visuals though. If a customer reports internet issues, a glance at a wall could quickly show if their connection is up or down.

Have you done any research on this? There are a ton of tools available for monitoring these aspects. It's a popular topic and comes up regularly. You might find a solution that fits your needs by looking into options like Checkmk, Prometheus paired with Grafana, or Zabbix.

Yeah, finding the right one can be a challenge with so many choices out there, and testing each takes forever!

From my experience, a monitoring wall isn't really worth it. I had 8 monitors showing the same data, and it didn’t provide any useful insights. Instead, focus on setting up alerts for things that need immediate attention. Streamlining to one solid monitoring system that meets your budget and needs would be much more effective. Custom dashboards for key performance indicators work better than a wall full of screens.

I’d definitely like to have a monitoring wall. I started with CheckMK, but I find the onboarding process a bit tedious in the free version.

We have a WUG map displayed on a 55-inch TV, and it’s been great. It looks impressive and executives really like it, so it’s a win for everyone!
