Tips for Building a Budget Home Media Server with Reused Components

I'm looking to upgrade my current home media server setup, which is older and sometimes has issues. I'd like to transition to a DIY build that can run continuously and support applications like OpenMediaVault, Emby, and Radarr/Sonarr, especially for 4K encoding. I have a friend who would like to lend me an unused i3-13100 CPU, but it's not compatible with my current motherboard. I also want to reuse my DDR4 2666MHz RAM (32GB total), my SSD from my old computer, and I have 20TB of external hard drives for media storage. My old setup includes a PCC002 power supply from HP rated at 240W, but I'm not sure if that's usable. My goal is to build this new server for under $500. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, as I'm still learning about this process.

You've got most of the key components sorted out! You’ll need to grab a case (around $50), a cooler (about $10-15), a motherboard (expect $70-80), and a new power supply since the HP one won't work—those usually run $30-$80 based on the type of case. Altogether, you can definitely build this under $200 if you shop smart!

Thanks for the breakdown! Any specific motherboard you'd recommend?
