Tips for Getting Z690 Motherboard to Work with 13th Gen Intel CPU?

I'm in a bit of a bind here! I recently picked up an Intel Core i9-13900K and I want to use my existing DDR4 RAM in a new build to avoid the high costs of DDR5. After some searching, I found a Z690 UD motherboard that seemed like a good fit. All it needs is a BIOS update to support the 13th gen CPU, or so I thought.

I've followed the instructions to update the BIOS: I downloaded the file, renamed it to GIGABYTE.bin, and loaded it onto a FAT32 USB stick. I've used both USB 2 and 3 sticks, tried different sizes, and even attempted to do a multi-step update with older BIOS versions. However, even though I can access the UEFI, every time I try to update, it throws a check error, and the motherboard powers down after a minute.

Finding a compatible DDR4 motherboard seems almost impossible, and I'm hesitant to spend money on a new board and DDR5 RAM. Any advice or alternative solutions would be massively appreciated!

Since you can boot to the BIOS, you might not need to use the USB flashback feature. The check error could mean the BIOS file isn’t compatible with your motherboard. Make sure you didn't accidentally download a BIOS for the DDR5 version instead of DDR4. Also, there's a chance that the file got corrupted during the download. Trying an older BIOS version could be a smart move to see if that works.

I've got the i9-13900K running on a Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 with the latest BIOS, and I've faced similar issues. I used 4 x 8GB 3600MHz RAM before switching to a 2 x 64GB kit, and since then, it's been smooth sailing. Just double-check that the BIOS file you're downloading isn't being extracted incorrectly to your USB drive.

Can you confirm the exact board model? It sounds like there could be some confusion around that. The specific model can really make a difference with compatibility.
