Tips for Migrating VMware VMs to Azure IaaS

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some real-world advice on moving around 500 VMware VMs to Azure IaaS. We're not looking to get into networking issues or reasons to refactor right now, but I'd love to know what needs to happen for a successful virtual-to-cloud migration. We already have our landing zone set up with connected data centers, and our AVD is ready to replace our on-premises VDI setup.

How much do migration tools usually handle, and will there still be a lot of cleanup work on my end? Do these utilities automatically deploy necessary extensions, or should I plan to install extra components aside from replacing VMware Tools?

Is Azure Migrate sufficient for transferring 500 VMs quickly, or should we consider using the complete RSV tool, or maybe both? I'd really appreciate any experiences or tips you have to share about this process. Thanks!

You'll definitely want to automate your migration with Azure Migrate. Also, if your budget allows, check out RiverMeadow for efficiency.

Just a heads up, costs can really add up. You might end up with the same systems but could see slower performance, and you've got to pay for every second they're active. I hope you plan accordingly!

Yeah, costs are one thing, but let’s not forget about the performance boost you get moving to newer infrastructure. Higher CPU generations and faster storage typically lead to better performance than older setups. The bills might jump but so should your service quality if you manage things right!

It’s a balancing act for sure. Just remember to weigh the costs against the potential gains in performance and scalability.

If speed is your main goal, consider using VMware on Azure. It simplifies everything since you won’t have to manage VMware tools or drivers, letting you focus on replatforming properly with storage that’s just where you need it.
