I'm in the process of setting up a network cabinet since my current setup is a chaotic pile of equipment. Right now, I have a 24-port switch that's fully utilized, a rack-mount UniFi network switch, a consumer LTE router, and some other accessories. I'm unsure about unplugging everything to make this more organized. I don't have any pictures to share, but I'm hoping for some tips on how to streamline the process and keep everything neat. Specifically, I'm wondering if labeling all my cables is a good idea, how to fit non-rack devices into the cabinet, and any other advice that might help me out. I plan to post before and after photos of the setup once it's all done. Thanks in advance!

Ensure your cabinet is deep enough for all your devices. Also, consider a UPS for backup power if you haven’t already. Use shelves for any non-rack equipment, and secure everything to avoid it becoming a tangled mess. Consistency in labeling is key! If you can, color code your cables to keep things organized, but remember that not everyone follows those rules once ‘techs’ get involved!
For wireless devices, keep them out of the cabinet! If your rack is enclosed or has mesh sides, that could block signals and create issues. It's best to keep them outside of the rack for optimal performance!
The organization really depends on your specific needs, but a few key points can help. First, consider getting a rack-mount shelf for any non-rack equipment. This can keep things off the floor and more accessible. And about your switch, consider investing in a 48-port switch instead of a 24-port; you never know when you might need those extra ports later on!
Make sure your cables are the right size; I always keep a stock of 6-inch Cat6 cables for quick changes. Color coding can also help a lot—like blue for regular ports, green for access points, red for uplinks, etc. It speeds up troubleshooting when you can instantly recognize what kind of connection you're dealing with!
Definitely label both ends of every cable with the host and port info. Forget zip ties for cable management; use Velcro straps instead—they're much easier to manage. Oh, and grab some cagenut tools if you can; they’re super helpful for installing equipment into racks. Also, rack shelves can fit your non-rackable gear nicely!

Or you could just shove everything in without a plan, right? Who needs organization anyway?
