Tips for Safely Removing an AMD AM4 Stock Cooler

I'm looking for advice on how to safely remove the stock cooler from my brother's AMD R5 3600 CPU without damaging anything. A few years back, I mistakenly ripped the CPU out with the cooler while trying to replace it, which ended up costing me quite a bit to fix. Now, the cooler hasn't been used much, but since it's about 5 years old, I want to clean out the dust and reapply thermal paste because the CPU is reaching nearly 80ยฐC while playing Armored Core 6. I'm aware that heating up the cooler might help, but I'd love more tips on safe removal techniques to avoid another mishap. What are the best methods to get it off without risking damage?

Another option is to use a hair dryer on high for a few minutes. Aim it at the bottom of the cooler and any accessible areas on the motherboard to warm up the thermal compound before attempting to remove it.

Definitely twist instead of pulling! When you've heated it up enough, just start slow to loosen it up, then you can wiggle and lift it off without trouble.

If you want a quick heat-up method that's easy, you can run a program like Prime95 to max out your CPU usage. Not only will it generate heat, but itโ€™s also great for checking stability if you're overclocking!

Heating up the CPU with some stress tests for about 30 minutes should do the trick. The thermal paste can get pretty stuck when it's cold. Just remember to twist it a bit instead of yanking it straight up!

HelpfulHarry7: Thanks for the simple advice!

A flathead screwdriver can be handy too. Just slide it gently between the cooler and CPU and twist it a bit. Be careful while doing this, and make sure the CPU is warm first!
