Tips for Transitioning from HDD to SSD with Windows 11

I'm currently using Windows 10 on an older HDD, and I've just purchased an SSD that I plan to partition for both Linux and Windows 11. My goal is to install Windows 11 on the SSD and transfer all my data (excluding the OS) from the HDD to the SSD. However, I'm worried about whether this might lead to any issues. I've heard that it's not ideal to have your main drive letter set to anything other than "C," so I'm curious if I can assign the new SSD that letter while my current main drive is also labeled as "C." Any guidance would be appreciated!

You can't change the boot drive letter, so your main drive will remain as "C" regardless. Moving your files from the HDD to the SSD should work fine. Just keep in mind that programs, apps, or games that need installation will need to be reinstalled on the new SSD since they can't just be transferred directly. If you're just moving personal files and data, you should have no issues at all!

It's understandable to be a little worried! When you're copying files, having two drives with the same drive letter won't cause problems because your system will recognize them as different partitions. Just make sure you don't run programs from both drives simultaneously. You should be able to access the data on both drives during the transfer, so it's a good opportunity to move everything over smoothly.
