Tips for Upgrading My Gen 3 PC on a Budget

I'm looking to upgrade my old Gen 3 PC that I built around 10 years ago without breaking the bank. My budget is around $250-$300, but I'm open to suggestions up to $500 if they make sense. Currently, my specs are:

- GTX 750ti 2GB
- Intel i7 4770k
- 16GB DDR3 RAM
- 1TB HDD
- 256GB SSD
- ASUS Z95 Pro WiFi motherboard

I want to be able to play modern games at 1080p with at least 60 frames per second. I don't need to max out the settings, but a decent gameplay experience is a must. I was thinking of just upgrading the GPU first and then updating other components over time. I'd appreciate any suggestions you all might have!

Honestly, your whole setup is pretty outdated for modern gaming. If you really want a smooth experience playing current titles at 1080p, a complete rebuild might be necessary. You'll likely need to invest around $1000 to really enjoy AAA games without hiccups. But if you're set on upgrading piece by piece, then maybe look into a used GPU or something like an AM5 system down the line.

Haha, I hear you! I was worried about that too. I’ve been gaming on a laptop for years. Thanks for the heads up!

Before you give up, consider that an entry-level modern GPU could surprise you. A used 2060 Super for around $150 could set you up nicely. Some newer games may run into issues without AVX2 support in your CPU, but many will still deliver a solid experience. Check out some benchmarks to see for yourself!

For sure! Is it perfect? No. But for basic gaming, you might be pleasantly surprised.

You're probably looking at a full system upgrade. You could grab a used GTX 1660 which would give you a decent bump in performance, but manage your expectations; you'll still be stuck with lower settings and around 30-60 fps on newer titles. Best bet? Save up a bit more and do a full build.

Check out used parts! You could snag a used i7 4790 or a 1660 Super for a decent price. That'll at least boost your gaming experience today while you plan for a full upgrade later on.
