Total Newbie Looking for Programming Guidance

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new around here and I've only used Reddit a couple of times, so I hope this is the right place to ask. I've been wanting to learn programming for years, ever since my time playing FiveM. Last year, I started dabbling in web design with some online resources, but life got busy, especially with the wedding planning we've just wrapped up. Now that I have a bit more time, I'm eager to dive back into learning programming. My job in construction keeps my hours wild, making it tough to sit down at my computer even when I'm home. I'm looking for any advice on where to start learning now. I would love to find some audiobooks that might help, but I'm not sure how that works with coding. I'm committed to putting in the effort to make a career out of this. My brother-in-law, who is a web developer, has offered to help me out once I'm up to speed, but I don't want to bug him too much. Any suggestions?

Have you decided what text editor you'll use? If not, Visual Studio Code is a solid choice. You might want to start off by creating a very simple web page first—it's an excellent way to get your feet wet. It’s okay if you can only do a few lines to start; everyone has to begin somewhere! Just take it step by step, and don't feel overwhelmed.

Yeah, I did manage to make some text pop up on a webpage! I’m starting from scratch since I forgot most of what I learned before. Planning to wipe my PC and get fresh installs tonight.

It sounds like you're on the right track! I recommend starting with the CS50 course; it's a great introduction to computer science and programming concepts. After that, you can decide if you want to focus on web, mobile, or desktop app development. Make sure to watch a course from sites like boot.dev where you can apply what you learn. It’s essential to practice by making small projects and gradually adding more features. Also, use Codewars regularly to improve your coding skills. Learning how to search for answers effectively online is crucial, too!

I’m glad you mentioned CS50; I’ve heard great things about it! I’ve also been checking out some coding challenges on platforms like Codewars to keep sharp. Good luck!
