I've recently taken on a new role where we use both Microsoft 365 E5 and Mimecast for our email security and archiving. Now that I'm settling in, I need to tackle the project of transitioning away from Mimecast to utilize the security and archiving features in Microsoft 365 instead.
I'm particularly concerned about the process of transferring archives from Mimecast to Microsoft 365 since we need to ensure all emails are preserved, especially since we haven't configured any retention policies yet.
Are there any vendors or partners that specialize in this kind of migration? I found one called Transvault that seems to offer this service, but I'm open to other recommendations. Additionally, any advice on setting up retention in Microsoft 365 would be super helpful as I'm a bit anxious about the purging policies we need to establish. I want to make sure we handle this correctly without risking the loss of important emails.

If you're looking for help with your migration, there are plenty of managed service providers or consultants that can assist you. Just be mindful that the archiving capabilities in Mimecast differ from what's available in Microsoft 365. It might also be a good idea to implement a third-party SaaS backup solution like Veeam or Dropsuite, especially after moving away from Mimecast.
For retention policies, there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Make sure whatever you decide aligns with your company's policies, as this can be really important for compliance and legal matters.

We're in a similar boat! We have a separate backup tool (Commvault) already, so it feels like we might be doubling up, but I agree we shouldn’t drop it. It's smart that you're mapping your Mimecast policies to Microsoft 365's. For sure, migrating each mailbox directly is the right approach, and any duplication that happens can be handled later. I'd love to see migration tools that can manage deduplication automatically too!
