Transitioning from Network Engineering to DevOps: What to Expect?

I'm considering making the switch from my position as a Network Engineer, where I earn over $180k, to a role in DevOps. I'm curious to know how big of a leap this transition would be, especially since I hold a TS/SCI clearance. I've got some basic Python skills for scripting with cloud providers and deploying infrastructure as code, plus I have foundational Linux knowledge, but I plan on enhancing these skills. Will I need to take a significant pay cut to break into the DevOps field?

These fields are different, but there are plenty of SCI cleared jobs out there. You’ll need to leverage your previous experience to make them consider you for a DevOps role. But if you're okay with a pay cut, how much of a reduction are you prepared for?

Honestly, my interest in DevOps stems from the variety of opportunities and the potential for higher pay, rather than just being an average DevOps person.

Networking and DevOps are pretty different fields. While some programs might have simpler DevOps needs, many are turning to container technologies like Docker and Kubernetes. If you want to make the jump, you'll definitely need to learn these skills, along with tools like Ansible. On the bright side, you might have an edge because there's a demand for cleared Software Defined Network engineers (SONiC).

To earn around $180k in DevOps, you’d typically need to be in a lead or principal role. That could make transitioning challenging, especially from your current position.

You can definitely make the switch into DevOps, but you'll likely need someone willing to take a chance on you. It’s possible, but don't expect to keep your current salary right away.
