Trouble Booting HP Laptop from USB for Linux Installation

I'm attempting to set up Linux Mint on my HP laptop but I'm having issues getting it to boot from the USB drive I created using Etcher. I've already disabled secure boot and tried enabling legacy support, but nothing is working. I would really appreciate any assistance with this!

Could you share the specific model of your HP laptop? Typically, you also need to enable the boot menu option in the BIOS. For many HP models, pressing ESC at startup followed by F10 will help you choose the boot device. Based on your laptop model, we might need to use a USB2 port or something else to get it working. Let me know your model number so I can give you more precise advice!

It's a HP 255 G5 Notebook. I've been hitting F9 to access the boot manager, and it shows options for Windows Boot manager and others. The USB option only shows with legacy support on, but selecting it pulls up a "no bootable device" message.

First off, make sure that you've set your BIOS to boot from the USB drive. When you're in the BIOS settings, you need to select the USB option and save the changes before you exit. It's also a good idea to check if the USB is bootable on another machine just to rule that out.

Have you checked the boot priority settings in your BIOS? If not, that might help. You can also try using the EFI menu while booting to select the USB stick directly. Sometimes this is a more reliable method than changing BIOS settings.
