Trouble Starting Xfce4 on Linux

I've been using Xfce4 on my system with Ly as my login manager, and everything was fine until today. I booted up and was taken straight to a shell instead of the Ly login screen. After running 'startx', I got a basic X setup with three xterm windows. I then decided to install lightdm and lightdm-gtk-greeter, and upon rebooting, I could log into an Xfce session (the default KDE Plasma just showed a blank screen). However, I'm still facing some issues. Occasionally, I encounter glitches where items blink out of existence when I click or hover over them. I tried reinstalling Ly and restarting it with systemctl, but logging into the Xfce session still gives me a black screen and logs me out immediately. Audio starts playing from my deadbeef, indicating the Xfce session is running somewhere, probably at TTY7, but Ly is configured to run Xfce at TTY2. I'm puzzled about what went wrong when I shut down my computer yesterday. It could be an issue with Xfce, the greeter, the NVIDIA drivers, or maybe Linux itself. My specs are: Arch Linux with linux-zen kernel version 6.18.1-zen1-2-zen, Ly, X server, Xfce4, running on an RTX 4060 with driver version 580.119.02. If you need more information or logs, let me know where to find them!

If it's still giving you issues, you might want to check if there are any logs that could provide more insight. You can usually find them in /var/log or check .xsession-errors in your home folder for any clues.

Hey! Did you update anything before you shut down? It’s odd that things just changed like that. After you log in, can you try running 'startxfce4' to see if that starts the desktop properly?

I think I did update yesterday. I noticed a Discord update, so I ran '-Syu' like I usually do because that updater is pretty bad. I'll reboot and try 'startxfce4' now.

After your reboot, did you see Ly run normally? When you logged in, was it working despite the glitches? It’s good to hear you got into the session, just annoying with those visual bugs.

Sounds like a weird issue. Have you checked if the glitches are tied to your graphics drivers? Sometimes they can cause havoc with the desktop environment, especially with newer RTX cards.
