Trouble with External Hard Drive not Recognizing on My Laptop

I've got a 6TB WD Elements external hard drive. Whenever I connect it directly to my Lenovo Legion Pro 5 laptop, it just doesn't show up at all—not in device manager, disk management, or file explorer. The weird thing is, it works perfectly on other computers. The odd part is that if I use an external USB hub with it, it functions just fine on my laptop too. I've tried resetting the drivers, updating my system multiple times, and reformatting the drive. Data on it isn't a concern for me since it's just games, but I'd really like to use the drive without needing to take a USB hub everywhere. Any suggestions?

It sounds like your laptop's USB port isn't providing enough power for that drive. Even if it's labeled as "portable," those larger drives can be pretty power-hungry. Have you tried using a different USB port on your laptop? A powered USB hub is also a solid alternative if the ports seem underpowered. It might help solve the issue without the hassle of carrying a hub around all the time!

I agree! Sometimes, certain ports just can't handle the load, even if they seem fine with smaller devices. Switching ports might be a quick fix.
