I recently put together a new gaming setup featuring a Ryzen 7800X3D processor and an RTX 5070, all housed in a Formd T1 case, equipped with an AXP90x53 cooler and a Noctua 14mm fan. I'm facing some frustrating performance issues while trying to run Fortnite at 144+ FPS with a mix of high and epic settings at 1080p.
Initial tests showed promise after I updated the BIOS and NVIDIA drivers, where I achieved a steady 200 FPS with CPU temperatures ranging from 65 to 75 degrees Celsius. However, after a day, the performance plummeted back to 100-120 FPS with CPU temps hitting 80-87 degrees, leaving me confused about what might have changed.
I've tried adjusting the curve optimizer in the BIOS to -20 but it didn't help. I also attempted to cap the CPU temperature at 75 degrees, but it still spikes above that when I start gaming. I'm seeing videos online of other setups similar to mine maintaining lower CPU temps in the low 70s, and I'm hoping to keep my CPU under 80 degrees. Any ideas on what could be causing these fluctuations or if there's an optimization issue with the game itself?

Did you switch to a Noctua fan for the CPU cooler? What’s your exact case setup? That could greatly impact your cooling efficiency.
The AXP90-x53 cooler might not be enough to keep your CPU below 80C, especially in a compact case like the T1. It’s common for such setups to struggle maintaining lower temps, and that cooler is on the smaller side. Generally, with SFF builds, aiming for below 85C is a good standard, and anything around or below this should still yield decent performance unless you're overclocking, which isn't recommended for the 7800X3D. If your temps occasionally hit the mid-80s or low 90s, that’s usually okay, but if they constantly exceed 90C, that's a cause for concern! To lower temps, consider upgrading to a larger air cooler or an AIO solution.
Thanks for the thoughtful answer! That makes sense. I have no idea how people are putting 9800x3D's and 5090's in these cases if I'm struggling with my setup lol. Do you have a SFF build by chance, and if so, have you had better luck with an AIO?
Are you completely sure that you're looking at setups using the same cooler and case? Those factors can significantly affect temperatures. While the 7800X3D is low-power, it's tricky to keep cool due to its cache layer. It’s likely that those you see online have different setups.

Yes, I'm using the Formd T1 SFF case.
