Trouble with RAM Configurations on My Build

I need some advice regarding my RAM setup. I'm using an MSI Gaming Plus B550 motherboard with a Ryzen 5700X3D CPU. My current RAM consists of two 8GB sticks running at 3200MHz with timings of 16-18-18-36 (Corsair Vengeance Pro). Recently, I added another 16GB stick at 3200MHz with the same timings of 16-18-18-36, but I also have another 16GB stick with different timings of 16-20-20-38. When I try to enable XMP, my PC powers on but I get no display or boot. I've tried disabling XMP and setting the speed manually to 3200MHz, but it still doesn't work. I'm curious if adding the third stick forces the PC into single-channel memory mode. When I manually set all timings to 16-20-20-38, my PC wouldn't boot and I had to reset the CMOS. I'd like to know if my problems are related to mixing RAM with different timings or if I'm just setting it up wrong. Am I missing something here?

Three RAM sticks typically drop the mode down to single channel, which would limit your memory bandwidth considerably. It’s great that you’ve seen it run with 4 sticks even if they aren’t on XMP, but I’d suggest trying to match timings across your RAM sticks to help things work smoother. Sometimes it might be necessary to underclock to get them stable. Your idea to run all at 16-20-20-38 could help, just make sure to test it out carefully!

It makes sense that fan might help things stabilize, but you could also test running them at a slightly lower speed, like 3000MHz. It might be worth a shot to find out if the system can handle mixed timings better at lower frequencies.

Mixing RAM sticks, especially with different timings and possibly from different batches, often causes issues, particularly on AMD setups. Even though you have similar specs, the performance could suffer due to incompatibility. If XMP isn’t working, that's a sign the mixed sticks are not playing nicely together. You might be better off sticking to RAM sticks that match exactly in terms of specs and timings, as that tends to lead to a more stable system.

I had a similar issue, thought I could mix sticks too. But once I switched to a matched set, everything worked beautifully. It’s worth considering a swap if you can.

In my experience, if you want to use the new 16GB sticks effectively, getting a matched pair – both in model and timing – makes a world of difference. If your friend has the other matching pair, perhaps try swapping for those to see if it improves the situation. Mixing up the timings often leads to headaches with booting and stability, which is what it sounds like you're running into.

Absolutely! I found a huge upgrade in stability when I finally matched all my RAM sticks. It’s worth the effort!
