Hi everyone! I'm completely new to the PC world and haven't even bought one yet! Being the oldest in my household besides my parents, I don't really have anyone else to ask these questions. I'm curious about how WiFi works. Do I need to subscribe to something for another router, or can I just buy one? Also, I'd like to learn how Ethernet works. I only have one outlet in my room, and while I know Ethernet is often faster, do I need a specific type of cord? Lastly, what is a modem, and do I need one? I'm autistic, so it's hard for me to find clear information without getting confused. Thanks so much for any help!

It sounds like you might have a router with weak WiFi signal in your room. If that outlet you mentioned is just for electrical use and not Ethernet, your main options would be to either run an Ethernet cable (which is the best for speed), or get a WiFi adapter for your computer if you want to go wireless. If it’s really weak, a WiFi signal booster is a great solution! Just make sure your computer has WiFi capabilities—if not, you might need a wireless card.
Hang in there; once you get your PC set up, you'll figure it all out!
The internet is a huge network. Your modem acts like a gateway, connecting your home's network to the wider internet. When you send a request to view a web page, it passes through your modem, then to your router, and finally to your computer which shows the page.
To set this up, you can connect your computer directly to the router using Ethernet. That’s reliable and fast because it moves data through cables. If you want the convenience of WiFi, your computer needs a wireless adapter—most modern PCs have that built in. If you want better WiFi in your room, you could consider a signal booster to enhance the connection!
So, in a nutshell, WiFi is the wireless option and Ethernet is wired. Both need a router connected to the internet. If your devices are stationary like a desktop, Ethernet is usually better for speed. But for mobile devices, WiFi is ideal. If you're sensing your WiFi is weak—for your setup, a WiFi booster could really help!
Ethernet is pretty straightforward! It's just a cable that connects your PC directly to the router, which is the box that connects your house to the internet. This setup is super reliable because it doesn’t get affected by interference. Just keep in mind you'll need to run a cable to your PC's location.
On the other hand, WiFi connects to your router wirelessly using radio signals. Most modern routers have WiFi built-in, so you should be good there. WiFi is great if your PC is in a different room, as it avoids the hassle of running cables through your walls. Do you already have home internet? Like, can other devices connect to WiFi?
WiFi sends and receives messages via radio signals. To use it, you'll need an internet service subscription and a WiFi router, but watch out for those that might charge you for a subscription; that’s not necessary.
As for Ethernet, it runs through physical cables, so you’d need a specific Ethernet cord connecting your PC to the router. Having only one outlet isn't a problem as long as you check what kind of outlet it is—like electrical or if it might be a cable or Ethernet outlet.
A modem converts the internet signal from your provider into something your devices can use. Usually, you need both a modem and a router! If your modem has a built-in router, then you’re all set. Otherwise, you’ll need to get a separate router for WiFi.
