Hey everyone,
I've got a PC that's a few years old and I'm looking to upgrade from AM4 to AM5. I'm not the most knowledgeable about PC parts, so I'm hoping to get some expert advice. I'd like to keep as many of my existing parts as I can—like the case, cooling, and PSU—as long as it won't hurt performance. My PC is mainly for gaming, specifically competitive FPS games, and I want to try switching the components myself, even though I've never done this before!
I know I need a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM to go to AM5. I might also invest in a new GPU. My budget is around £1500. Here are my current specs:
- Case: 7000D Airflow
- CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X
- GPU: 3090
- Motherboard: ROG Crosshair VIII Hero
- RAM: 4x 16GB DDR4 3600MHz
- PSU: RM1000X
- CPU cooler: H150i Elite Capellix
- M2 SSD: 2x Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
I'm considering the following upgrades:
- Motherboard: Maybe an X870E, but I'm unsure about the differences in features and pricing.
- CPU: Thinking of going for the Ryzen 9 9900X3D.
- RAM: Looking at 2x 32GB DDR5 6000MHz.
- GPU: Debating whether it's worth it to upgrade to a 5070 Ti or a 9070 XT, or even push for a 5080.
Any thoughts or feedback on my potential upgrades would be super helpful! Thanks!

Here’s a part list I put together for you: n- **CPU:** AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D £393.44 n- **Motherboard:** Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 £199.99 n- **Memory:** TEAMGROUP T-Force Delta RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 £89.99 n- **Storage:** Klevv CRAS C910 2 TB NVME SSD £94.99 n- **Video Card:** Palit GamingPro-S GeForce RTX 5070 Ti £668.99.n nTotal is around £1447, which is within your budget! For gaming, you don’t really need to go for the Ryzen 9 9900X3D; the 9800X3D will perform just great. A B850 motherboard is sufficient while saving you money, and you can always upgrade your RAM later if you really need more. As for the GPU, the 5070 Ti is a solid choice and can be overclocked for even better performance if needed! You can reuse your current case, PSU, and cooler, so that’ll keep costs down too!
Solid recommendations! I would just add that if you’re focused on competitive gaming, prioritize the GPU performance to avoid any bottlenecks.
