I'm trying to set up a webcam that needs to be placed about 30 feet away from my PC for volunteer work. My budget is tight as I'm trying to gather various equipment for the task. I have two 16-foot USB cables, and while one works fine on its own, connecting both doesn't seem to work. If I use a powered USB hub between the two cables, do you think that would successfully power the webcam?

You're right about power and data transmission issues over long distances. While a powered hub could potentially help, I recommend looking into active USB extension cables as they can handle longer distances more effectively. They might just do the trick!
Have you considered using a Wi-Fi webcam instead? They can be quite affordable—something around $25 might work out cheaper for your setup.
You're pushing the limits of USB here! I suggest opting for a PoE webcam along with a PoE injector or switch. This combo should keep your costs under $100, and it works like a charm!
USB cables have maximum length limits, and powering devices over long distances can be tricky. A powered hub might help, but it’s not primarily designed for this use case. Is there a way you could get the PC closer?
Actually, what you really need is a USB over Ethernet solution. It can be a bit pricier, but it allows for USB connections over greater distances using Ethernet cables. Perfect for your needs!

Agreed! Unless your goal is security, a PoE webcam would indeed be a more sensible approach.
