I recently upgraded my main gaming PC and now I have all the components except for an AM4 Ryzen CPU for another build. I'm looking for an affordable CPU that will pair nicely with an X570 motherboard, a Noctua D15s cooler, 32GB of RAM, and an RTX 3080. I've noticed that prices for the 5600 and 5600X have skyrocketed recently. Are there any lesser-known budget AM4 CPUs that would work well for a casual racing setup at 3440x1440 resolution? I'm open to options that can get the PC up and running without breaking the bank.

If you can find a 5800X, it's an excellent choice and often priced around $183. It's a solid 8-core CPU that can handle most games really well, especially racing sims. I have one that I run at 4.4GHz, and it rarely gets too hot, even in demanding titles. The slight price difference from the 5600X could be worth it for the extra cores and threads, especially considering the 3080 you're pairing it with. However, if you need a cheaper option, the 5500 was suggested but might not be sufficient for your setup due to its PCIe Gen 3 limitation.
If you're really pinching pennies, the R5 5500 is about $75, but be warned that it does limit you in the long run—especially with future games. It might get you through for now, but considering the hardware you have, you might want to save for something better.
You might also want to keep an eye out for 5700X deals on eBay or AliExpress. I found one for just around £115 and it performs exceptionally well with my setup. If you can catch one on sale, it can be an excellent budget option.
I’d suggest considering the Ryzen 5 3600 or 3600X as they are still very capable for gaming, especially at 1440p. Prices are usually around $67 to $100 depending on where you shop. They strike a great balance between cost and performance and can handle most modern games without a hitch. Plus, the 32MB L3 cache is a nice benefit over the 5500's 16MB which can help with some tasks.
I agree, the 3600 has been solid in my builds. I've used it with higher-tier GPUs and had great experiences with smooth gameplay.
Honestly, if you see a good deal on the 5600X, I’d grab it. It’s right around $150 and should provide solid performance without bottlenecking your 3080. Just a few months ago, these CPUs were much cheaper, so the current prices are frustrating.

Exactly, the 5500 is pretty limited compared to the 5800X, especially with its outdated PCIe support. It's just not going to keep up with a 3080, in my opinion.
