I'm currently using two laptops along with two 29" monitors and a few USB devices like an audio interface, keyboard, and mouse. My setup features a basic switcher for the monitor and keyboard, but I'm still manually switching the audio interface, which can get annoying when the computers sometimes don't recognize the USB devices without a restart. Due to constant window shuffling when I switch monitors, I've opted to stick with one monitor per machine, which isn't the most efficient setup. Are there any KVM switches that can help maintain HDMI and USB handshakes? I want to be able to switch all devices seamlessly while ensuring both laptops believe they're still connected, even if this means some windows end up off-screen. Any suggestions?

I've been using the TesSmart KVM switch with a desktop and laptop setup along with two monitors. I have my keyboard and mouse connected to the KVM, while a powered USB hub handles other accessories. I've tried both HDMI and Display Port models, and the Display Port has been way more reliable for me. The great thing is I rarely lose accessory connections, and if it happens, reconnecting the USB device usually fixes it. To keep everything smooth, make sure the KVM has "EDID" tech—this is key for maintaining window positions and USB connections during switching. By the way, I also got my audio interface hooked up directly to the KVM for easier mic input during calls!
Just remember, EDID alone won't do the trick; you also need EDID management and emulation. That way, the KVM can keep the device info flowing even when it's not selected. Plus, look out for USB emulation too!
You might want to consider having a hub for each laptop, both tied into the KVM. I have my audio connected to each laptop and split out to the speakers, which simplifies things. However, using audio with a KVM can get tricky. In your case, if you just need the audio to correspond to whichever machine is in use, then that setup should work.
True, managing audio can get complicated! I'm thinking a hub that can maintain HDMI handshake would be ideal instead of relying on the KVM for that. I'm exploring other solutions too.
It’s important to have a KVM that does connection emulation so each computer thinks the devices are always connected! EDID support really helps monitor issues as well.

This advice is super useful, thanks for sharing!
