I'm looking to set up a game server for Vintage Story that can handle a lot of players, ideally between 200 to 500. I've already pushed it to 250 players, and I want to go beyond that! Currently, I'm using a 9950X3D CPU, but I'm hitting a wall with the core count. I need a processor that supports up to 16 threads, with one main thread that communicates with the others. So I'm on the hunt for a high clock speed CPU that also does well with multithreading.
I've explored options like the Xeon, Epyc, and Threadripper CPUs, but many of them have lower clock speeds than what I'm after (I need at least 5GHz). I'm particularly interested in a few Threadripper models, like the 9980X, 9985WX, and 9995WX. Would these give me better performance than my current CPU due to their higher core counts? I understand this might be overkill for a game server, but I'm aiming for maximum performance to support as many players as possible. What specs should I focus on for the best setup?

Have you considered the AMD EPYC 4585PX? It might provide similar core count and clock speeds as your 9950X3D, but it could have better multithreading capabilities. Just keep in mind that RDIMM RAM might be slower than UDIMM RAM.

That's a good point! It would be interesting to see how it compares to your 9950X3D in terms of performance with heavy loads. Multithreading can definitely make a difference!
