What Are the Best Practices for Backup Recovery Testing?

I'm looking for advice on how to effectively test backup recovery, especially for virtual machines and the files within them. Our organization is ISO9001 certified, and during a recent audit, it was pointed out that our quarterly backup verification as per our backup policy isn't adequate. How do you all structure your backup testing processes? Also, it would be great to know what size your organization and IT team are, just for context.

I run 12 restore tests each month, focusing on different scenarios. For example, I might do a full restore from the last backup at site A one month, and then a full VM restore from the replicated backup to site B the next month. I also test file restorations from archived backups and mix it up by randomly selecting different servers and files. It keeps things fresh and ensures we’re covered on multiple fronts.

Have you checked if your backup solution offers automated testing according to a policy? It could save you time and make the process smoother!
