What Are Typical Development Rates for Software Providers?

Hey everyone! I'm curious about what others are paying for development work from their software providers. I currently have a couple of providers charging around £1000 per day, but I've just received a quote from another company for £1700 for a single day of work. Before I react too strongly, I wanted to see what development rates you all have experienced, especially since we're a UK-based company and the software in question is a construction package. Just to add some context, we already pay £60,000 yearly for this software, and I'm looking to get a few fields added to a report. Thanks for your insights!

Honestly, those rates could even seem low depending on what work is being done. I've seen ERP consultants charging much higher, like over €2500/day for urgent projects or complicated tasks. Just remember, the scope of work can heavily influence the day rate.

If you're getting a quote for £1700/day, you need to ask yourself what extra value they're offering compared to the £1000 provider. What you consider reasonable is subjective, but you should be aware of what effort is involved in your request.

I totally hear you. I'm just trying to gather info on market rates to avoid getting overcharged.

Honestly, £1700 for just two fields on a report feels steep. If your software uses a standard SQL database, that sounds excessive. Really, it comes down to how crucial those fields are to your operations—calculate the long-term value they would bring before deciding if it’s worth the cost.

Yeah, it really depends on the context! The pricing might be standard for things like Sage 300 CRE implementations.

The rates you're seeing aren't entirely out of the question. £1000/day translates to about £125/hour, while £1700/day comes out to around £215/hour. Just for context, back when I worked in consultancy twenty years ago, my rate was around $150/hour. Keep in mind that specialized software often comes at a premium. You might even get better pricing if you stick with one provider instead of juggling multiple. It’s possible that the £1700 quote reflects the hassle of dealing with multiple vendors in the mix.

Thanks for the breakdown! I wasn't sure what to expect, so this helps put things in perspective.

Last project I worked on, we were charged $250/hour, which is around $2000 for a day. Rates can definitely vary, and it sounds like your quote isn’t out of line considering your requirements.

I appreciate the input! Seems like the rates I'm seeing align more closely with American pricing since they've been acquired by a US company.
