I'm thinking about launching my career as a Windows Sys Admin and I'm curious if I'm on the right track with a few certifications I have in mind:

- Network+
- Microsoft 365 Certification
- Microsoft Hybrid Admin Certification

On top of that, what essential skills should I develop? Also, I'd love any tips for setting up a homelab. Just for context, I have a basic understanding of networks—I can subnet and set up VLANs, and I'm pretty good at troubleshooting. For my homelab, I'm currently using a ThinkPad E15 Gen 3 with an AMD Ryzen 5, 24 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD, and a 1 TB SSD.

Your certs are a decent start, but what will really help you is getting hands-on with varied systems, not just in a homelab. Getting familiar with routers, switches, and servers makes a difference. Focus on gaining a deep curiosity for solving problems rather than just checking off a checklist of things you know. The drive to understand the root cause of issues is key!

The certificates you mentioned will give you a foot in the door, but gaining diverse experiences in different areas is crucial. Try to work on projects that let you configure and troubleshoot various hardware and software types. If you can, focus on building a network of contacts in the industry—your connections can help you find opportunities to grow your skills!

Before diving into certifications, remember that real-world experience can often outweigh them. While Network+ and Microsoft certifications are beneficial, I'd recommend focusing on learning PowerShell—it’s a game changer and widely used in the field. Also, if your potential workplace utilizes AWS or Azure, getting some entry-level certification on those could be a smart move. Don’t overlook soft skills, though! Being able to communicate well and manage your tasks effectively will help you stand out.

Thanks for the advice! How can I gain relevant experience while being a full-time student? I had an internship last summer, but it was mainly working with SharePoint with limited admin privileges.

Consider some volunteer opportunities or part-time gigs that allow you to assist with IT tasks. Even working on personal projects or collaborating with classmates can build your skills and help you network.
