Hi everyone! I'm looking to break into a junior sysadmin or IT infrastructure role in Europe and need some practical advice. I have hands-on experience with Linux and understand the basics of system administration, including Linux architecture, filesystem, permissions, services, and processes. While I haven't held a formal sysadmin position yet, I have been working in Linux environments for labs and practice. My main questions are: Which certifications are actually recognized in Europe for junior sysadmin roles, and which ones are most beneficial for securing interviews rather than just looking good on LinkedIn?

I might be an exception, but I've been in this field for 30 years without any certifications, and I never felt the need to get one.

A great strategy is to look at job postings and see what employers are specifically asking for. Sometimes, advice from individuals can lead you astray if they aren't aligned with current employer requirements.

Getting certifications without real-world experience can be hit or miss. Sometimes, having a few certs can help you land a junior role, but nothing beats actual hands-on experience, especially when you're starting out. Most people begin with helpdesk roles. If you have a good troubleshooting mindset and are willing to learn independently, you can go far. Networking knowledge is often undervalued, so consider setting up a cheap lab to practice core concepts. I've seen many CVs with tons of certifications, but when pushed for basics, many crumble because they lack practical experience. Good luck on your journey!

Certifications to consider include CompTIA A+, CCNA, Security+, and RHCSA. These are well-regarded and can help strengthen your resume.

Focus on the jobs and skills that are in demand. Microsoft skills are becoming increasingly important, especially in today's AI and cybersecurity landscape. Consider learning about Intune and security features. It's also worthwhile to invest in a Microsoft 365 subscription to experiment in a lab environment before diving into certifications.
