Hey everyone! So, I just got my hands on a 5090 FE from Nvidia, and I'm looking to optimize my whole setup to make the most out of it. Here's what I currently have:
- **CPU**: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
- **Motherboard**: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F
- **GPU**: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Vision OC 10G
- **RAM**: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (DDR4 3200 MHz)
- **Cooling**: NZXT Kraken Z63 with standard case fans
- **Storage**: Crucial P1 1TB SSD and Lexar NM790
- **Case**: NZXT S340VR
- **PSU**: XFX 650W 80+ Bronze
I'm considering an upgrade for the CPU, possibly to the 9800X3D, but I think that would also require a new motherboard, right? What motherboard would you recommend for that? Also, do I need to upgrade my RAM? I hope my cooler is fine, but should I look for a new case with better airflow? And how about the PSU? I'm thinking I might need a 1000W one, especially if I'm planning to undervolt the 5090 to manage temps without sacrificing too much performance. Any guidance you could provide would be amazing! Thanks a lot!

Yeah, the 9800X3D is a solid choice for gaming! For motherboards, aim for B850 or X670. You’ll have a lot of choices based on features and price. As for RAM, DDR5 is the way to go now. For cooling, your NZXT cooler should be fine, but a new case with better airflow will help manage heat from the 5090. Just make sure to get a case that fits the GPU—you might want to check dimensions since the 5090 can be larger than the 3080. Also, keeping your NVMe drives is a good call; they’ll be compatible with the new setup.
You're definitely on the right track with considering upgrades. If you're going for the 9800X3D, you'll need a new motherboard and RAM since it's AM5. For the motherboard, look for a B850 or X670 board; just watch out for the brand—avoid ASRock since they've had some issues with the 9000 series. As for RAM, you'll want to upgrade to DDR5, ideally 2x16 GB at 6000 MT/s. That’ll give you the best performance!
Keeping your liquid cooler is fine if it’s still in good shape, but you might want a case with better airflow. Something like the Corsair 4000D or Fractal Design Meshify will do wonders. Your NVMe storage can stay, but do a fresh Windows install after upgrading.
Absolutely need to upgrade your PSU to at least 1000W for the 5090. Don't reuse any cables from your current PSU either; they can cause issues. Look for a fully modular 1000W PSU with 80+ Gold rating from brands like Corsair or Seasonic. They’re reliable and will last you a long time with your new setup.
Great! I’ll check those out. Would a modular PSU help with cable management too?
You're going to need a new motherboard and RAM for sure. The 9800X3D is awesome, definitely go for it. Just remember that AM5 only supports DDR5 RAM, so look for 6000 MT/s kits to maximize performance. A 1000W PSU is ideal for the power-hungry setup you'll have. I recommend going for a fully modular PSU for easy cable management—makes life a lot easier!

Thanks for the detailed advice! How about the PSU? Any recommendations for a good 1000W model?
