What Could Cause My Monitor to Make a Crackling Sound?

I've got a 12-year-old Iiyama 24-inch monitor that just started making a weird crackling sound, almost like it's arcing. I've been in tech for a while, but I've never dealt with this kind of issue before. The monitor uses CCFL backlights, so I'm wondering if the bulb might be going bad. The sound seems to come from the top back of the monitor, not from any speakers.

If it's a CCFL monitor, it's probably time to replace it. Monitors are quite affordable these days—I've seen good deals on eBay and local charity shops for under £30!

That's a good point. I was already considering an upgrade to something like 27-inch monitors anyway. It still works for now, but this might just be the nudge I need!
