What CPU Should I Choose for a Future-Proof Gaming Build?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my PC from an i5 6600K overclocked to 4.40 GHz because it's really struggling with racing simulators like Forza Horizon 5 and F1 24 at 1440p. Gaming is a priority for me, but I don't do it all the time. I'm curious if there's a big difference in performance between Intel and AMD CPUs, specifically the i9 14900K compared to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, or is that just a myth mostly discussed in 1080p resolutions? My budget for the CPU is around 500 to 600 euros. I've always used Intel, but I've heard AMD offers great performance and larger caches. What do you recommend?

Given your budget, I'd recommend the 9950X3D. It has tons of cores and threads but keep in mind, future-proofing is a bit of a myth in the PC world. Still, for longevity, it’s a robust choice. You'll be set for a while with either the 9950X3D or the 9800X3D since they both support the AM5 platform, making future upgrades easier.

I’d love to go for that, but it’s about 840 euros where I live!

Have you looked into power consumption for that one?

If you're thinking ahead, the 9800X3D will definitely serve you well in gaming. It's not just about high FPS; the cache design makes it perform better in real gaming scenarios, leading to fewer hiccups. If you're looking to save some bucks, the 7800X3D is a solid alternative at around 100 euros less, just a bit slower than the top-tier options.

Smart advice! Definitely consider the 7800X3D if you want to spend less.

Right now, I think AMD is leading the gaming scene. The Ryzen 9800X3D is a fantastic choice since its larger cache helps smooth out gameplay, especially during intense moments. Intel doesn't really compete in gaming anymore, especially since they haven’t adopted 3D stacking cache. If you can afford it, the X3D chips are worth it for future gaming. The 9800X3D is currently the best gaming CPU out there, with the slight exception of the pricier 9950X3D, which is overkill just for gaming.

Totally agree! Plus, I've heard the 9800X3D is priced reasonably here in Germany at about 517.99 euros, which is pretty close to the i9.

You might want to check out some benchmarks comparing the 9800X3D and the i9 14900K. They'll give you a clearer picture of how they perform under various gaming conditions.

Just so you know, true future-proofing is really debatable. Software evolves, and sometimes what’s top-of-the-line now won’t be that impressive a few years down the line.
