I'm diving into the world of desktops and recently picked up a good deal on a used PC. After some testing (OCCT and more), I'm happy with it except for one major part—the CPU. Right now, I have an Intel i5 8400, which feels seriously outdated compared to my laptop's performance. I want to replace the CPU and motherboard to prevent bottlenecking my new Gigabyte RTX 3060 12GB. I'm planning to play mostly AAA games, but nothing too CPU-heavy like Factorio or Dragon's Dogma 2. I'll also be doing light coding and statistical modeling with SPSS or R, which isn't demanding. My budget is around $650 CAD, and I prefer sticking with DDR4 RAM due to cost concerns with DDR5. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

For your needs, I’d recommend the i5-13500 or i5-14500 along with a B760 motherboard that supports DDR4. These CPUs are solid and shouldn't bottleneck your RTX 3060, giving you great performance for gaming and your coding tasks.
Check out this build: [https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zCY6t7](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zCY6t7). If your current cooler isn’t sufficient, consider grabbing the Peerless Assassin 120SE for $35. The 5600X or 5800X are also great options, but the i5-13400 is much more powerful for just a little extra cash. Plus, if you ever decide to upgrade to DDR5 in the future, the 14600KF CPU can work with those boards too!

Thanks for the tip on future upgrades! That info about being able to reuse the CPU on a DDR5 board is really helpful!
