What CPU should I pair with a GTX 1080 for a new build?

Hey everyone! I've got a GTX 1080 that's been sitting around from a build I did about a decade ago. Last year, I built a high-end PC with a 4080 and a 7800x3d, but now I'm looking to put together a new setup for my partner. They plan to use it for task management, 3D modeling, Photoshop, and some gaming. I want to make sure that there won't be any bottlenecking, so I'm looking for recommendations on a CPU that would work well with the GTX 1080. Any thoughts? Also, while I'm not particularly worried about budget right now, I'd love to know what would match the GTX 1080 best before considering prices.

Honestly, any reasonably modern CPU should work fine with the GTX 1080. Since you didn't specify a budget, I'd suggest looking at AM5 processors like the Ryzen 7600 or 7700. They’d give you plenty of power for your partner's needs and allow for some future upgrades. If you want to save a bit, you might check out AM4 or LGA1700 platforms, but they won’t offer an upgrade path down the line.

That sounds good! I’m also wary of going for something that feels outdated too quickly.

Exactly, I definitely want to plan for the future!

I’ve paired a Ryzen 7600 with my old GTX 1080 and it works great as a second rig. Should handle your partner’s tasks easily! Plus, it keeps things nice and smooth for gaming.

Make sure to think about the resolution your partner will be gaming at. A 12700K is pretty cheap these days and a solid option. If you can spend a little more, the Core Ultra 5 might be worth it. Just keep in mind, the 1080 might start to bottleneck in gaming since it’s getting older.

Yeah, it’s a good point. The 1080 is still decent, but it won't handle the latest games at max settings.

Thanks for the tip on resolution! I'll definitely keep that in mind.
