What CPU upgrade should I choose and how do I pick a case and cooler?

I'm considering a CPU upgrade and looking for recommendations. I'm a bit unsure about the performance differences between options and whether it's worth the investment. I play CPU-intensive games like Palworld, Planet Zoo, and Satisfactory, and I currently have a Ryzen 5 10400F paired with an ASUS B460M motherboard and a 5070 GPU. I'm thinking of getting a bundle that includes either the Ryzen 7 9850X3D for $700, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for $600, or the Ryzen 7 7770X for $500, all with 32 GB of RAM. I want to stick with 32 GB since I multitask a lot. Considering my current DDR4 2666 RAM is slow, would it be better to upgrade that too? Also, I have some follow-up questions regarding cooling solutions and a suitable case. I currently own an iBuyPower Trace 4 MR case, which is pre-built, and I'm trying to figure out how to choose a cooler and a new case. Is now a good time to buy, or should I wait a few weeks?

You don't need to wait on prices; they’re unlikely to change in just a few weeks. For a good case, check out the Lian Li Lancool 217 or the Lancool 215. They’re affordable and have great airflow. Pair that with the Thermalright Peerless Assassin or if you’re looking for something more sophisticated, try the Thermalright Aqua Elite V3 360. Great choices for cooling without breaking the bank!

I recommend the Lian Li Lancool 207 or the Antec Flux as well. Both offer great thermals in a standard mid-tower frame for a solid price. Also, for cooling, I’m currently using an Antec AIO and haven’t had any complaints!

The 9850X3D might be overkill for your needs, but if Microcenter has solid bundle deals, it could be worth it since you're already struggling with your current DDR4 2666 RAM. Upgrading RAM alone could help a lot. For cooling, a $60 tower cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 could get the job done while also being affordable, and any mid-tower case should work with it just fine.

DDR4 was looking a lot better before I saw those Microcenter prices. Thanks for the tip!

When it comes to those CPU choices, you might not see a huge difference in gaming performance between the three, but definitely consider the 7800X3D if you're serious about CPU-heavy games. That 3D VCache can give you a boost! The 9850X3D is top tier, but you may not need to pay for that extra performance unless you're doing some serious multitasking or future-proofing. For cooling, air cooling is usually just fine unless you're really after that flashy AIO look or have a cramped case. A popular budget option is the Thermalright Peerless Assassin, which you can grab for about $35 and it works well with Ryzen CPUs. Also, just pick a case that you like visually, and it should support the ATX motherboard you’ll likely be using.

Thanks that helps a lot! As nice as aesthetics are, I’m hoping to spend less money on cooling, so good to know liquid isn’t needed!

I’d say go for the 7800X3D! Plus, selling your old DDR4 RAM can help offset the costs.

Thanks! Yeah, that’s what I’m planning to do.
