What damage can a wrong PSU cable do to my PC?

Hey everyone! My PC recently bit the dust after using a PSU cable from Amazon with my Corsair AIO. It worked fine for about two weeks, but today it just wouldn't boot. Now, I'm getting a bunch of weird color codes on the motherboard and while I can get back into the BIOS, it won't load Windows. I'm getting blue screens saying 'Windows is missing UEFI' and it keeps freezing during the boot process.

I'm really concerned about the potential damage this cable could have caused. The AIO seems to be okay, and the CPU is running fine, but my GPU—a 7900 XTX Hellhound—doesn't appear to be working. The fans spin for a moment, but it's not detected in BIOS at all.

Could the faulty cable have damaged my GPU, or might my motherboard be at fault?

First things first, I would swap out the power supply to see if that's where the problem lies. After that, you might need to check the motherboard next, then finally the GPU. That's a good order of operations based on what you've mentioned.

What power supply do you have? And do you maybe have a backup GPU to try? If that Amazon cable wasn’t from Corsair, I would avoid using it. Even if it worked for a bit, it could still be causing issues.

I’ve got a Corsair RM1000X. I got the cable saying it was compatible but... who knows now!

If the cable was wrong, it should have caused an immediate failure. Normally, you wouldn't get a few weeks of functionality before disaster strikes. It’s possible that a bad connection is responsible, which could have caused intermittent issues. Just thinking out loud here.

Sounds like you’re on the right track! If things were working fine for a couple of weeks, it’s less likely the cable is the sole issue. I would suggest getting a new PSU just to be safe. In my experience, motherboards are often the main culprits when things go haywire in a rig.

Yea, the motherboard is definitely concerning. I've seen all the lights, but the GPU isn’t cooperating. I’m going to recheck all the connections and hope for the best.

Definitely worth a shot! Be sure all cables are seated properly; that can often fix these kinds of issues.

Honestly, anything going wrong with a PSU can wreck the entire PC, and it can be tough to identify which parts have failed. The GPU fans not spinning could be nothing to worry about since many GPUs have a zero RPM mode. Just keep that in mind as you troubleshoot. Best plan is to stay away from that sketchy cable and get a new PSU.
