I recently bought an MSI Mag x870 Tomahawk motherboard for a new build, but I noticed that the thermal pad for the first M.2 slot fell off before I could even start the installation. It seemed a bit loose in the box. Since this is my first time installing an M.2 SSD, I'm not entirely sure how to proceed. Is it normal for the thermal pad to come loose? How should I go about installing the SSD in this case? I've figured out a bit already, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right!

Sounds like the cover fell off, but don’t stress! There’s usually a screw that helps secure the thermal pad in place. Install the M.2, use that screw to secure it, then you can attach the cover. If it's a Gen 5 drive needing a heatsink, you might want to ensure it's secured, but most other drives work fine even without one, especially with good case airflow.
That makes sense! I didn't realize not all drives really need the heatsink. Appreciate the tips!
It's actually pretty normal for that thermal pad to come loose before installation. What you can do is just place the SSD in, put the pad on top of it, and then reattach the heatsink. Everything should work just fine.
Got it! I just needed to confirm it was okay for the pad to be loose. I think I'm understanding the setup better now. Thanks!
I appreciate the help! Just trying to get everything setup smoothly.
Thanks for the reassurance! I was worried I’d mess something up. I’ll definitely look for that screw.
