What Do Those Big Red X’s on My Desktop Folders Mean?

Hey everyone, I came across a weird issue today. One of my users had some folders on their desktop showing giant red X's overlaying them, which definitely caught my attention. Initially, my mind raced to ransomware when I saw it, but after closing and reopening OneDrive, the red X's disappeared. I ran a full scan on the laptop, and everything came back clean. I've encountered the usual small red X's related to sync issues before, but these huge ones are a first for me. Has anyone else experienced this?

This is a bit off-topic, but you might want to ask in a more dedicated tech support subreddit. They'll probably have better insights on this issue!

Not trying to troll, but are you sure that image isn’t AI-generated? That icon style hasn’t matched anything from past Windows versions I've seen. Just making sure it’s legit!

Those big red X's usually indicate that OneDrive is having a sync issue, like with duplicate files or something not being available offline. Just check the OneDrive icon; it should provide more info about the issue! Sometimes it's just a display problem for online files that aren't available offline.

Right, if they're online files, that's probably why you're seeing those X's. Make sure you're logged into OneDrive properly and that the files are set to available offline.

Honestly, I’ve never seen anything like that before! It looks super weird. I would check if those folders are tied to OneDrive or if maybe the icon display style got messed up. Some OS versions might show different icons based on settings, you know? Just a thought.

Yeah, I agree! It might just be how the icons are displaying in your version of Windows. Sometimes updates change these things.
