What exactly is an “app” on Windows?

I've been dealing with some frustrating random bluescreens on my Windows 10 laptop. I checked the Microsoft page looking for a fix, but all it said was to check my drivers and possibly reset Windows. My drivers seem fine, so I'm wondering, is the problem usually related to drivers?

Also, I saw that 'resetting' Windows claims to keep my personal files but removes 'apps and settings'. Back in my day, we referred to them as programs. Is it correct that Windows just calls them apps now? If I reset, will it keep all my files except .exe files? Are these apps something you get from the Windows Store (which I've never used)? I couldn't find much info on Google about this.

It sounds like you've hit a tough spot with those bluescreens! First off, check your minidump files; they can really help pinpoint what's causing the issue. And yes, you're right—Microsoft calls programs 'apps' nowadays. They usually mean software you can install from the Windows Store or elsewhere on your computer.

In Windows speak, an 'app' is just shorthand for 'application.' Most Windows crashes tend to link back to driver issues, so keep that in mind! Just remember, when resetting Windows, your personal files should stay safe, but those downloaded programs might not.

To answer your question, 'app' equals application, and that's what Microsoft calls them now. A reset keeps your personal stuff but can remove installed apps. If you're feeling adventurous, you might want to check if you can use the Performance Monitor (just hit WIN+R and type perfmon.exe /rel) to see recent crashes.

Apps are essentially just the modern term for software you install on your computer. As for the reset feature, a clean install is often a better choice than a reset if you want to avoid potential problems. It's known that the reset can be iffy and might lead to more headaches.
