Hey everyone! I'm about to dive into building my first PC and I'm curious about how many frames per second (FPS) I actually need for playing FPS games. I currently have a 2k monitor with a 170Hz refresh rate, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to upgrade my setup just to see a difference my eyes might not even catch. What do you think?

I think it’s all subjective. For me, anything above 120 FPS feels smooth, but I can’t really tell the difference once you get past that. If you want that competitive edge, go for something higher, but if you’re just playing for fun, 170 FPS should do you just fine.
Exactly, higher FPS gives a smoother experience, but make sure your game settings are optimized, too.
It really depends on your personal experience. Most people can see changes up to around 240 FPS, but past that, it starts to feel less significant. I hit a max of around 165 FPS comfortably on many games, but the demand on my GPU makes me think about an upgrade. It's all about the feel you want when you play.
Right? Building for consistent 120 FPS is great. I found focusing on stability is way more important than just hitting higher numbers.
Exactly! Some will say even 90 FPS feels smooth enough for casual play.
For me, the jump from 60 to 120 FPS is really noticeable, and I start to feel the diminishing returns after that. If you’re not playing super competitively, that 170 FPS should be more than enough to enjoy your games without issues.
Totally! I think most casual gamers can have a great time with around 120 FPS. Just make sure your visuals are nice too!
Yeah, it's often about balance. I focus on achieving solid graphics while hitting a comfortable FPS.
Honestly, I can't really tell the difference between 144Hz and 240Hz myself. I upgraded my monitor, but it felt a bit unnecessary since I can run my games at over 200 FPS without really noticing a major jump in smoothness. However, many argue that jumping from 60Hz to 144Hz is where you’ll really feel a difference!
Same here! I think once you’re past a certain point, like 120 FPS, you’re in diminishing returns territory. Unless you’re super competitive, it's not as crucial.
Totally agree! Plus, I’ve seen big improvements in response times going to an OLED at 240Hz compared to my previous VA panels.

Agreed! Plus, personal preference matters a lot. Some can’t tell the jump from 120 to 165 FPS, while others can feel it.
