I had a scary thought recently. If my phone stops working, I could lose all my two-factor authentication codes in the Google Authenticator app. I do have some recovery codes saved, but I'm worried about what would happen if I couldn't find those codes. Would I completely lose access to my accounts? I heard I should ask this here for more insights.

Good news! Google Authenticator is now synced to the cloud with your account. It used to be a big problem if you lost it, but now, as long as you can access your main account, you should be in the clear.
You really should back up your authenticator codes to your Google account! If you lose it all, you might be locked out and, usually, no one can help— not even Google Support. It’s smart to have multiple authentication methods set up and print out your backup codes. I’ve got a password, a few passkeys, recovery phones, Authenticator on two devices, and ten backup codes just in case!
You’re keeping those recovery codes in a safe place, right? I hope you’re not just guessing! Make sure you know where they are. If it really comes down to losing 2FA and having no back-up codes, you’re in a tough spot.
If you lose your phone and need a replacement, don’t worry too much! You can usually restore your apps from a cloud backup. When I upgraded my phone, I let the cloud do its thing, and my Authenticator was right there and worked just fine. Just make sure you're backing up regularly!
I learned the hard way! My phone broke while I was overseas. It was my only device, and I had no access to anything else. I moved my SIM to a cheap prepaid phone and used text message authentication to get back into my Google account. So, always check for a backup email or other methods. You can often choose a 'try a different way' option to access your account.
