What Happens to Images Taken with Google Lens?

I'm curious about the privacy implications of using Google Lens. Specifically, when I take images for search or translation, what really happens to those images? Are they uploaded to a server or CDN and stored? Or is there local processing for translations, with only the text being sent? For searches, do they send the image and then delete it afterward, keeping just a record that I searched something using an image?

You might want to check the Terms and Conditions for more details. In general, you should assume that they have the capability to do whatever they want with the images. But honestly, I doubt they gain much from the images themselves unless it helps with improving their service or targeting ads. The real question is whether they keep the images forever or just temporarily. That seems to be unclear.

When using Google Lens, remember that Google is primarily an advertising company, and they thrive on collecting user data. For translations, it's likely that they process the text locally to some extent, but image recognition probably requires sending images to the servers because processing that on-device would be super slow. So, expect that they're collecting data, even if it's just for internal use. You could try it out and see if it can work offline, but just know that Google tends to gather information for their advertising purposes.
