Hey everyone! I'm reaching out for some guidance on what types of projects would be good for my portfolio as I aim to become a full stack web developer. I've been feeling a bit lost lately. Although I haven't gone through university training like many in this field, I'm eager to move forward. Currently, I'm working on a custom WordPress web app where I've used vanilla JavaScript and PHP for about a year. During this time, I've tackled tasks like implementing CRUD functionality, building backend logic, and creating frontend features, but I still feel like I'm not making much progress.
I don't have a portfolio yet because I'm unsure what to build. I'm wondering if creating landing pages and simple web apps would be acceptable, even if I feel inexperienced. Additionally, I'd appreciate your thoughts on what languages or tools I should learn after improving my skills in JavaScript and PHP, since there seem to be so many options out there. Any advice or ideas would really help!

It sounds like you're struggling with knowing your next steps, but I wouldn't rush into learning new languages just yet. Focus on sharpening your problem-solving skills instead of just following tutorials. I found programs like Boot.dev really helpful to tackle small problems head-on. Also, don’t underestimate the impact of small projects; I built a basic full-stack music app that really boosted my confidence. Just choose something small that excites you and enjoy the ride!
When it comes to portfolios, anything with traction is usually better received. It shows you can create projects that resonate with others. Don't sweat about what others think – focus on what you enjoy!
I see, thank you!
Start simple with your resume or CV. It's a great way to showcase your journey, even if it’s basic, and from there you can add more detailed side projects as you go along.
Thanks for this!
I recommend working on projects that reflect your interests. It keeps you motivated and shows off some of your personality. I’ve been there too, and despite not landing a job yet, I've enjoyed the project creation process a lot!
I see, yeah I agree, that’s a good way to stay motivated. Thanks!
Thank you for this input, will definitely follow that advice! Just taking it one step at a time, but running on fumes lately so this is exactly what I needed.
