What lightweight OS should I install on my old PC?

Hey everyone! I've got an old PC with 4GB of RAM, integrated graphics, and an i3 processor. It's super slow to boot up with Windows 10 because it eats up so many resources. I'm considering switching to a lighter OS. I also want to know if changing the OS will erase all my personal data. I'd appreciate any recommendations or tips you have. Thanks!

Look into the distro selection page online for more lightweight options. Aside from Mint, you might consider MX Linux or even antiX. They're all pretty easy to set up. And don’t forget to back up your files before making any changes!

Switching to an SSD can also hugely improve your boot time, even with Linux. If you can, upgrade your hard drive first! That will make a noticeable difference.

You might want to try Linux Mint with the XFCE desktop environment. I've updated a few old PCs, and this combo works great and is user-friendly. It's really lightweight and should run well on your hardware.

Here’s a step-by-step to keep your data safe:
1. Back up your data to an external drive.
2. Download the Linux Mint XFCE ISO from its official site.
3. Create a bootable USB or DVD with it.
4. Boot from the installation media and explore Mint before fully installing it. Just make sure you mount your old Windows drive to access your files during the process.

I'd recommend Linux Mint with XFCE as well! It's one of the lightest options out there. Just remember, it's crucial to back up your personal data first because installing a new OS will erase your current setup. Make sure to grab an external drive for that.

Yeah, definitely back up everything before switching. I lost data once because I forgot to do that. Just safer to have it on a USB drive.
