What Linux Distribution Should I Choose for Transitioning from Windows?

Hey everyone! I'm currently using Windows and have been for about 6 to 7 years, migrating from version 7 to 10 and now 11. As a web developer, I've noticed a lot of programmers prefer using Linux as their main operating system. I've tried out Ubuntu and Linux Mint and found them quite decent, but I'm wondering if jumping straight into something like Kali or Arch would be too overwhelming. I really want to challenge myself and learn Linux through the command line. I've also stumbled upon Termux for mobile Linux commands—do you think that's worth exploring? If so, what are the best free resources to help me learn?

For beginners, I'd recommend sticking with Ubuntu or Linux Mint. Many find Linux Mint more user-friendly. You might also look into Zorin OS or MX Linux as alternatives. Kali and Arch are better suited for more experienced users, so it might be a tough start with those! Thanks for the heads-up! I didn't realize Mint was still a popular choice for newbies.

I appreciate the insights! I always thought I should just dive into Arch or Kali.

I’d still recommend Mint for starters, but if you want to really dive deep into command line learning, going for a barebones Debian system could help you get familiar with the commands better.

OpenSUSE is another good option. It's pretty straightforward to install and manage, making it a good balance between ease of use and functionality.

If you're leaning towards something more advanced, you could start with Debian, since Kali is essentially Debian with added security packages. From there, you could gradually move towards Arch. Just make sure to read the documentation—it's a huge help in learning Linux commands!

That’s solid advice! I’ll need to dive into the documentation to get the hang of it.

Since you’re curious about a challenge, you might want to try CachyOS. It’s based on Arch but has a user-friendly graphical installer which makes it easier to get started without getting lost in complexities.

That sounds interesting! I like the idea of an Arch-based system that's user-friendly.
