What Linux Distro Should I Choose for My Mom’s Old PC?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on choosing a Linux distribution for my mom's old PC. It's an Intel Core i3 with 8GB of RAM and has been running Windows 10, but it's starting to slow down, and I want to switch her over before Windows 10 loses support. She mainly uses it for basic office tasks like web browsing, Microsoft Excel, Word, and viewing PDFs.

I'm hoping to find a distro that feels similar to Windows in terms of functionality and user interface, and that's also very user-friendly. Also, I'm curious about which programs handle Microsoft Excel and Word files the best since I've heard that some alternatives work better than others. Any recommendations? Thanks for your help!

You can’t go wrong with either Mint or Zorin. They both offer solid experiences for new users. As for office applications, using LibreOffice is a good starting point, and it integrates well with various formats. Also, you might want to check out FreeOffice for a smoother experience with Microsoft files.

Linux Mint is a fantastic choice! It's user-friendly and feels very much like Windows, which is great for someone who's used to it. If she mostly uses browser apps like email and YouTube, Mint will serve her well. For office tasks, LibreOffice is a solid option that works well with most files.

I second the Mint recommendation! You can also set the default file types to .docx and .xlsx to ensure smooth compatibility when sharing files.

I recommend trying ZorinOS since it has a user interface that's quite similar to Windows, making it easier for your mom to adapt. For office tasks, OnlyOffice has the best compatibility with Microsoft files which might help a lot with her documents.

Definitely consider Mint in the XFCE version! It's lightweight and should run smoothly on her PC. It's also quite familiar, which could make the transition easier for her.

But keep in mind, any Linux distro will be different from Windows, so she might need some time to adjust!

Honestly, any distro would work fine for that hardware, but Zorin's look is more Windows-like. It could make it easier for your mom since it will feel a bit familiar. Just make sure to guide her with basic tasks when she switches over!
