What Phone Can I Use for Linux with Full Freedom?

I'm looking for a smartphone that allows me to install Linux and provides complete freedom to keep it updated, even as it ages. I've heard about phones like Google Pixels with GrapheneOS but noticed that after a certain point, they can't support the latest versions. I'm curious if there's a different phone that offers total freedom without these limits. Additionally, are there any user-friendly custom Linux OS options for phones, similar to how GrapheneOS is set up? I'm interested in finding a specific brand or model that supports this. Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

What do you mean by "freedom"? Are you talking about privacy from big tech companies or the ability to customize the system? Depending on your needs, something like Termux on Android might suffice, but if you're after full Linux, there are KDE and Ubuntu mobile versions to consider—though device support might not be great. Maybe sticking with GrapheneOS or Android is still your best bet for now.

Isn't it strange how computers are easier to install different operating systems on compared to phones? The tech details for phones just aren't as available, which makes it tough to support alternative OS's.

You might want to check the LineageOS project; it supports a variety of phone models and gives you more control over your software than typical Android. Just keep in mind that while you can install Linux, popular apps like banking or chat services may not work.

Honestly, there are Linux systems for phones, but they tend to run poorly. If you stick with GrapheneOS on a Pixel model 8 or 9, you'll probably get about five years of reliable updates, which is pretty solid. That's your best bet for freedom!
