I'm currently working as a Sysadmin and taking on some side consulting work for a small business. I've done various tasks like GoDaddy migrations and tenant setups before for friends and family without charging. Now, I'm helping a small company with about 6 employees, and the work will involve a lot of different tasks including GoDaddy Defederation, setting up security features, migrating user profiles, and establishing collaboration tools. I'm quite confident in my abilities and have successfully completed similar projects before. My question is, what would be a fair hourly rate to charge for this comprehensive setup?

You definitely want to make sure you have some kind of business structure in place, like an LLC, and consider getting Errors and Omissions insurance, even if it's just for peace of mind. That said, for the scope of work you've described, I’d recommend charging about $150-$180 per hour. Keep in mind that rates can vary based on where you live, so it may be worth adjusting based on local market rates. If you're looking to attract clients, starting a bit lower could help too.

Yeah, I agree. Charging around $150-$180 is a good range, especially for comprehensive projects like this. If you plan on working longer hours, you could lower the rate a bit for those as an incentive. It's totally normal to feel unsure about pricing when you're starting out, especially if you haven't taken on paid work before. Just make sure you feel comfortable with what you're charging!
